What can we say about lip balm besides that it’s… the bomb!
Completely dated phrases aside, we love us a good stick of lip balm, especially during these cold winter months. In fact, we’re such big fans that a few of us over at the PipingRock office decided to gather up the ingredients necessary, meet up in the kitchen and make our own… with fantastic results! Try ’em out for yourself–it’s a fun activity the whole family can get in on, plus they make great gifts and party favors!
Check out our simple step-by-step how to below…
What You’ll Need
- 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) Piping Rock Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oi
- 1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) Piping Rock Organic Cocoa Butter (You can also use Shea Butter!)
- 1 tablespoon (1/2 ounce) Piping Rock Sweet Almond Oil (You can also use Grapeseed Oil!)
- 2 tablespoons Beeswax (Yellow or White)
- 1/4 teaspoon Piping Rock Peppermint Oil (Sweet Orange Oil & Vanilla Oil work well, too!)
- 15 Empty Lip Balm Tubes held together with a rubber band
- 1 Plastic Funnel (We used the small one)
- 1 double boiler (We made one using a glass measuring cup & a tall pot)
Step 1
Create a double boiler using a glass measuring cup and a tall pan (or whatever you have in the house that you use for your double boiling purposes). Put on the stove over medium heat, keeping an eye on the water and making sure it doesn’t come to a rolling boil, which could cause water to get into the glass cup. Add your coconut oil and cocoa butter, stirring as they start to melt.
Step 2
Add you oils and beeswax. Continue to stir until all of the coconut oil, cocoa butter and beeswax are melted and the oils are well combined. This should take around 10-12 minutes or so, depending on the size of the batch you’re making.
Step 3
Once the ingredients are melted and combined, remove from heat. It’s time to start pouring! Place your empty tubes on a flat surface, making sure the bottom dials are twisted all the way down and they’re banded together so they won’t accidentally tip over while you’re pouring. With a steady hand, pour the liquid into each tube using a funnel. You’ll want to do this with a bit of haste since the liquid will solidify quickly and could clog the funnel if you let it sit too long.
Step 4
Let the tubes sit for about an hour until the liquid has completely cooled and hardened. Pop on the cap and you’re ready to go!
