What is Goldenseal?
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), also known as orangeroot, is a woodland plant, part of the Buttercup family. Native to North America, this ancient herb’s roots contain bitter alkaloid compounds, derived from thick, heavily knotted, yellow rhizomes. These rhizomes are notorious for their natural supply of alkaloids, hydrastine and berberine, as well as traces of essential oils and resin.
Origin of Goldenseal
Centuries ago, Goldenseal was discovered by Native American tribes (Iroquois and Cherokee), who steeped its roots in hot water to make traditional tea. They also boiled the roots to make yellow dye, used in various cultural practices.
This powerful herb can now be obtained through a variety of supplement forms such as capsules, tablets, and liquid extract. It is often paired with Echinacea and other antioxidant-rich herbs for synergistic support.
