Thyme hails from the warmer climes of Europe and is a perennial flowering herb in the Lamiaceae family, along with basil, mint and oregano. The plant has tiny leaves, which are the most notable source of its oil, though all parts of the herb may be used. Thyme's aroma is woody and spicy, and its aromatherapeutic qualities are numerous!

History of Thyme

Literally maintaining a low profile, this small ground-hugging herb has a deceptively big aroma, one that led to its medieval use as a gift to departing knights to reinforce the ideals of strength and courage. Incorporated into the mummification process in ancient Egypt, thyme also has ties to the spirit world in the European notion that the plant attracted fairies. With its fresh and uplifting scent, thyme may be understated as it grows, but its oil has a strong and positive presence.
