History of Vanilla Bean
The second most expensive spice in the world (after saffron), vanilla has long been a sought-after commodity. It was first cultivated by the Totonac people centuries ago, who inhabit the eastern coast of Mexico in what is now Veracruz. The vanilla plant was a staple of their culture; according to ancient Totonac mythology, the vanilla plant was born when the Princess Xanat fled with her mortal lover, of which her father did not approve. The lovers died together, creating the very first vanilla orchid.
